Theo Pinto’s Illusory Canvases Glisten in the Arabian Desert – SURFACE

Title of work: Skyscapes Mirage (2023).

Where to see it: 1×1 Gallery, Dubai, until May 15.

Three words to describe this work: Be here now.

What was on your mind at the time: A week before the opening, I had a vision of unveiling the paintings in the Dubai desert. The idea was to create a temporary installation that captures the essence of my paintings while juxtaposing nature and art. It was a surreal experience to be there, a week later, feeling the desert sand on my feet and the warmth of the sun on my paintings.

An interesting feature that’s not immediately noticeable: These works are oil paintings finished with a special enamel that I developed in the studio. When seen up close in person this special treatment reacts to color and light giving it an optical effect that changes the nature of the painting according to its surrounding conditions. This feature was most magical to witness in the desert, where the paintings harmonized with the environment and light, shifting gradually as the sun was setting.

How the work reflects your practice as a whole: I’m interested in creating works that resonate with the soul and elevate the spirit, making my art an extension of my spiritual practice—a means of connecting with the divine and bringing more light into the world. I hope to create a sense of refuge for the viewer, a place where they can find tranquility and wholeness in the midst of their busy lives.

One song that captures the work’s essence: “Mother’s Wingspan” by Ben Leinbach.
